“The houses I had were taken away from me,” writes the poet George Seferis at the beginning of “Kichli.” In Greek tragedies, after every collective disaster, a long inquiry follows, sometimes touching upon the gods, in order to find the causes and seek their origins.

In the case of Cyprus, it is pointless to go that far. The tragedy began on July 15, 1974, when the colonels in Greece staged a coup against President Makarios, thus provoking the Turkish invasion of the island. Since then, a long dividing line known as the Green Line divides Cyprus into two homelands, splitting in half even the heart of the Capital, Nicosia.
