Panagiotis Tournikiotis argues that the history of modern architecture is written backward; it starts from the present and projects its perceptions and worldviews onto the past. What appears as the beginning of the narrative - the industrial revolution or the artistic avant-gardes - is, in reality, a reverse reflection of the epilogue.
The historical texts that have nourished entire generations of architects do not describe what actually happened in the past but rather those that establish, as "precedents," what should happen in the immediate future. The text that appears as history is, in fact, a theory and essentially functions as a manifesto.
