The "Innovations in Education" series aims to contribute to the strong delineation of educational work and teaching practice of candidates and serving teachers with publications related to the implementation of innovative topics. The series is addressed to those involved in educational activities.
This publication deals with an important pedagogical issue concerning the Small Rural Primary Schools. It consists of two parts. The first part (theoretical) presents the historical development of these schools as well as the research approaches that have been attempted both in Greece and internationally to clarify their basic parameters. The second part (empirical) presents, for the first time in the Greek context, primary empirical data concerning the academic performance of students attending Small Rural Primary Schools in Greece and the attitudes of the teachers serving in these schools for this specific school type. The publication concludes with conclusions that can be useful to the educational community as well as to the policy makers in education.
