Description

The assassination of Aldo Moro, the president of the Italian Christian Democracy party, in May 1978, was the result of two criminal acts. This is what Leonardo Sasa argues in this chronicle, where he describes Moro's captivity in the so-called "people's prison" and the unjustifiable (and suspicious) "harsh" stance of the Italian government that refuses to exchange him for thirteen prisoners of the Brigades: Moro - a moderate, religious professional politician - sees, from his position as a captive, his friends abandoning him, sacrificing him, and exploiting his death.

His values collapse, the Vatican turns its back on him, and everyone remains silent. Moro, from a political leader becomes a lonely and helpless creature in the face of death. Beyond the event that marks the definitive transformation of the Red Brigades into a gang of deranged murderers ("who confused homicide with revolution"), the "Moro case" is a human tragedy.

Not because a man was executed, but because his party, his church, his country continued their course indifferently, just as indifferently as planets revolve around themselves. Furthermore, it is a social tragedy: so much blood, so many "revolutionary" words, so many struggles, resulted in the opposite outcome from what the Red Brigades theoretically sought.

On the day of Aldo Moro's execution, flags of the Christian Democracy party (which was complicit in the murder) waved in the squares, and later, when it was revealed that the Christian Democracy Party was an offshoot of the mafia, the Italian public, instead of turning left, turned to the right. The Red Brigades - and a series of other groups and acts - had debased the meaning and ideology of the Left: Italy found itself, as Moro had predicted, before an abyss.

The "adorable," as Pasolini liked to say, Italian chaos evolved into a far-right parallel state: fortunately - it seems to imply Sasa - fortunately, Pasolini left early.
