Description

A panoramic book of modern Greek history to learn "truths" that historical research overlooks or suppresses. How much do we really know about the history of Greece during the first half of the 20th century? Historians usually emphasize wartime events, the achievements of great men, and political and social rivalries. However, many of the "omissions" of History are equally, if not more, interesting.

Drawing from numerous sources, the authors of this book highlight the hidden side of the period 1910-1945: unknown incidents related to military operations, military movements, as well as significant social and political events (the National Schism, the Trial of the Six, the fate of the refugees, etc.). Additionally, aspects of everyday life during this period are presented, while the character and actions of not only the key players on the political scene are brought to life, but also figures from the fields of science, literature, and the arts (among others, A. Delmouzos, P. Delta, N. Kazantzakis, P. Kanellopoulos, K. Karyotakis, A. Papantoniou, A. Fleming).

Indicatively, the contents of the book:

  • WAR OPERATIONS
    • The Balkan Wars
    • World War I
    • The National Schism
    • The Asia Minor Campaign, the Trial of the Six
    • The refugees
    • World War II
    • The Occupation and the Resistance
  • MILITARY MOVEMENTS
  • THE ACTION OF PERSONALITIES
    • The protagonists (E. Venizelos, Constantine, N. Plastiras, Th. Pangalos, I. Metaxas)
    • The royal family
    • Figures from political, social, and cultural life (A. Delmouzos, G. Iakovidis, N. Kazantzakis, M. Kotopouli, P. Kountouriotis, K. Manos, Str. Myrivellis, Th. Sofoullis, A. Stergiadis, K. Tsaldaris, A. Fleming, etc.)

During the First Balkan War, the Greek army captured Thessaloniki. However, Bulgarian military detachments were stationed in the city while the Bulgarians were still allies in the fight against the Turks. On June 30, 1913, after the outbreak of the Second Balkan War, the Greeks demanded that the Bulgarians leave the city. However, they refused, hoping that a large Bulgarian force would soon arrive to take control. While most Bulgarian soldiers and civilians were arrested, a small military detachment fortified itself in a central building in Thessaloniki and opened fire on the Greek military unit besieging them. When the building began to be demolished by artillery fire, the surviving Bulgarian soldiers surrendered, with no officers among them. The officers had secretly left, dressed in women's clothing. A few days later, they were arrested when they could no longer hide their faces, which were blackened by their unshaven beards.

many small facts that we did not know about the Balkan wars in a nice style and easy to read, it is worth seeing the political turmoil of the era with the Venizelists and the Royalists
