Description

The volume includes the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Pontic Studies entitled: "Pontus in the Late Ottoman Empire (1774-1908). Society and Economy", a joint organization of the Philosophical and Theological School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which attracted the interest of reputable and experienced researchers of Pontus from Greece and abroad. Conclusions from years of research contribute to the mapping of the field of human geography internationally around this specific scientific subject.

The historical events of the era, with the economic-political penetration of Europeans, the gradual descent of Russia into the Black Sea and the Caucasus, the revolutionary movements in the European possessions of the Ottoman Empire led to the adoption of reforms and the modernization of its various institutions.

The book presents positions as well as reflections on the results of these changes, such as the search for new trade routes, the creation of conditions suitable for commercial exchanges, changes in the composition of the population in the developing urban centers of the coastal Pontus and their cultural expression, the facilitation of the missionary activities of the Catholic and Protestant Churches, significant population rearrangements for the life of the settlements of Pontus, etc.
