“Starting from Van Gogh, all of us, -no matter how great painters we consider ourselves to be-, are to some extent self-taught; one could almost say that we are naïve painters.
Painters no longer live within the framework of a certain tradition, and thus each of us must rediscover all of our expressive means from scratch. Every modern painter has the inalienable right to invent this language from A to Z. No criterion can apply a priori in their case, because we no longer believe in strictly defined measures.
In one sense, this represents liberation; at the same time, however, it is an incredible limitation, because when the individuality of the artist begins to express itself, they lose in terms of organization what they gain in terms of freedom. And when you can no longer subject yourself to some form of organization, then you essentially have a serious disadvantage.”
