The decision theory presented in this book aims to remain strictly descriptive. Our concern is not to defend the right of an existence that is tormented by abstractions and systems, yet ceaselessly pulsates and seeks its own paths, to make decisions that are absolutely autonomous and profoundly personal.
This right has been defended until now by the prevailing variations of decision theory, as seen in the so-called existential philosophies. We will show, on the contrary, that this committed decision theory can never be imposed long-term or on a socially significant scale, no matter how much it has constituted or still constitutes a normal phenomenon of protest in certain circumstances in the history of ideas.
