This manual is the first volume of a teaching method for children's or school choirs or group singing, aimed at children in the early grades of elementary school (6 – 8 years old). It includes a collection of songs adapted to the vocal range and capabilities of children at this age.
It serves as a comprehensive annual teaching method for children who are singing in a choir (children's choir, music school, etc.) or in the classroom for the first time. The method consists of two books: the teacher's book, which contains a choral anthology of methodically selected children's songs from Greece and abroad, translated into Greek.
Each song comprises a teaching unit (or choral rehearsal) which includes the following parts: 1) general information about each song, 2) learning objectives, 3) teaching guide for the song, 4) instructions for the exercises present in the student's book. The student's book contains the corresponding choral repertoire and is accompanied by practical exercises that methodically teach music theory and basic music reading principles for young children.
The main objectives of the method are to teach children to use their voices correctly, producing a healthy head voice, to recognize the notation of the choral score, to read and not just memorize the songs being taught, to recognize rhythms, melodic patterns, and musical forms, and to use their bodies in rhythm with the song, methods that significant music educators, such as Dalcroze and Orff, have successfully integrated into their teaching for children of this age.
The selected choral repertoire consists of Greek and foreign melodies, translated into Greek, so they can be easily performed by small children. The songs are written in appropriate keys for the vocal range of ages 6 – 8 years, without exposing the voice to extreme areas. The format of the songs is in unison, while scattered throughout the course of the method are also rounds, which can be taught and performed in concert, either in unison or in two groups, depending on the number and capabilities of the children, as an initial experience of "polyphony."
All the musical material of this edition has been in practical application by the author since 2009, in a prototype experimental teaching program for choirs for children of this age. Children are introduced to the program without prior audition or voice selection and are taught singing, basic principles of choral discipline, and elements of music reading, with the aim of integrating them into the polyphonic sections of the children's choir after completing the current teaching program.
The two-part rounds contained in the method serve as an initial polyphonic experience for the children, helping them to approach more complex choral works in subsequent choir sections with better preparation. The themes of the selected repertoire vary, allowing them to be presented in concerts with different thematic sections throughout the school year, and there is also a small collection of Christmas songs suitable for the range and capabilities of the voices of children of this age.
This method is followed by the upcoming second volume, for children aged 8 – 10 years, which transitions from unison and the simple rounds of this volume to two-part harmony and choral works, both Greek and from the international repertoire with their original lyrics.
