This manual serves as a teaching method for children's choir for students in the early grades of elementary school (ages 6 – 8). A selection of songs has been made that corresponds to the vocal range and capabilities of children in this age group.
This first volume is a comprehensive annual teaching method for children who are starting to sing for the first time in a children's or school choir, or in group singing as part of the music class at school. The method includes two books: a) The teacher's book: it contains the repertoire of the selected songs and is accompanied by a tri-fold: 1) information about each song, 2) learning objectives, and 3) a teaching guide for each song. b) The student's book: it contains the same songs, which are accompanied by practical exercises that systematically teach musical elements related to the specific song and help the child learn to read the score.
The aim of the method is to teach children:
- A healthy head voice and the ability to sing in the correct pitch
- Recognition of basic notation of choral scores
- Basic elements of music reading and not just memorization of the taught songs
- Recognition of rhythmic and melodic patterns
- Musical forms
- Basic body movement elements combined with singing, elements that important music educators, such as Dalcroze and Orff, have successfully integrated into their teaching for children of this age.
- An initial acquaintance with the families of string, wind, percussion, and keyboard musical instruments.
The musical material comes from Greek and foreign melodies, translated into Greek for easier learning by young children. The songs are written in appropriate tonalities for the vocal range of ages 6 – 8, avoiding exposing the voice to its extreme ranges. The form of the songs is in unison, while a series of rules are presented throughout the flow of the method's lessons, which can be taught and performed in concert, either in unison or in two groups, depending on the number and capabilities of the children.
This specific musical material has been developed through the application of a standard experimental program that the author has been implementing since 2009 with children of this age. The two-part rules function as a primary polyphonic experience for the children, helping them advance to polyphonic choral works in the next stage of their choral education.
The themes of the songs vary, so they can serve as material for concerts throughout the school year, while there is also a small collection of Christmas songs, vocally suitable for young children. This method constitutes the first volume of teaching choir for young children ages 6 – 8 and is followed by the second volume for children ages 8 – 10, where the transition from unison and simple rules to more complex two-part harmony is made through authentic choral works from the Greek and international choral repertoire.
