Description

This collection of texts and photographs focuses on the small streets of Athens. On streets that I walked either deliberately or by chance. They are part of a representative anthology of minor Athens, that is, the city that feeds the Athenian center but also, in an almost inevitable way, lives a separate, self-sufficient life that is moving in its autonomy.

The neighborhoods of Athens are an endless treasure. All the old neighborhoods of Athens are sanctuaries of valuable instillations of urban life, with qualities often underestimated and diminished. This small book aims to honor minor Athens, in the way of those who experienced the grace of the Athenian neighborhood.

These texts wish to honor simplicity and honesty, the basic materials with which the neighborhoods of Athens were created.

from the preface by Nikos Vatopoulos

On one of these streets, named after Captain Lahanas (a hero of the Revolution from Samos), I stopped to examine a small house. I might have passed by it if I hadn’t noticed the front door in time. In front of me was a little interwar house, at number 3 Captain Lahanas Street, with the classic artisanal style, its tiles, and that touching simplicity found in neighborhoods. My gaze was captured by the small wooden front door. It was painted in that faded green, which contains white and perhaps yellow, but gave the impression of pistachio, just like the nut inside. It was a door with personality, geometrically designed not by chance, and as I observed it, unexpectedly, the taste of the English countryside came to me. I did not expect to have this association on Captain Lahanas Street in Kato Patissia, but there it was—a door, with clear origins from the Arts and Crafts movement, revealing to me, deep within the neighborhood, the diversity of Athens.
