Nadia Murad was born and raised in Kocho, a small rural village in northern Iraq. She and her siblings, members of the Yazidi community, lived a quiet life until August 15, 2014, when Nadia was just twenty-one years old, and everything changed.
Armed militants from the Islamic State (ISIS) ravaged her village, executing men who refused to convert to Islam and women who were too old to be sold as slaves. Nadia was taken to Mosul where, along with thousands of other Yazidi girls, she was sold in an Islamic State "slave market."
Having been repeatedly raped and sexually abused, she eventually managed to escape. Today, Nadia's story has not only forced the world to turn its attention to a largely ongoing genocide but also calls us to take action.
A shocking testimony, a tribute to the will to survive and to the boundless love for her lost homeland, her wounded community, and her family shattered by war.
"A terrible testimony, recounting with bravery Murad's experiences and questioning the complicity of those who knew of others' suffering and remained silent." The New Yorker
"A painful autobiography... set against a complex historical backdrop... I Am Their Voice poses explosive questions for readers that urgently demand answers." The New York Times Book Review
"Murad's book saddens us – and inspires us." People
"Murad opens a window and shows us the horrors that destroyed her family and nearly wiped out her vulnerable community. It is a brave document that serves as an important step toward holding those responsible for horrific crimes accountable." The Washington Post
