What are these needs? The primary need is to acquire certain basic knowledge of Psychiatry, which will be useful in the future practice of the medical profession. To obtain this knowledge, it is essential to provide simplified information, as free as possible from psychiatric jargon, to avoid detailed exposition of theoretical views, and to focus on clinical reality.
A second need is the adoption of approaches that differ from the dominant biological model, meaning familiarizing oneself with the perception that illness (and health) is determined not only by biological but also by psychological and psychosocial components. This approach is called holistic or bio-psycho-social approach and applies not only in psychological medicine but also in physical medicine.
A third need is related to acquiring certain skills. In Physical Medicine, skills include percussion, auscultation, and surgical ability. In Psychiatry, the main skill to be mastered is the skill of communication. It has a complex significance, both diagnostic and therapeutic, and is gradually achieved through continuous effort, knowledge, and patience. In clinical Psychiatry, the primary method of communication is the psychiatric interview.
Can a Psychiatry book teach skills? Certainly not. However, it can contribute to this goal by covering the theoretical aspects of them. This is attempted in the first chapter of this book.
