The book you have in your hands is primarily aimed at medical students. We therefore considered that the style of writing and the content of the book should align with the needs of the recipient.
What are these needs? A primary need is the acquisition of certain basic knowledge of Psychiatry, which will be useful in the future practice of the medical profession.
A second need is the adoption of approaches that differ from the dominant biological model, meaning the familiarization with the notion that illness (and health) are determined not only by biological but also by psychological and psychosocial factors.
A third need is related to the acquisition of certain skills. In Physical Medicine, skills include palpation, auscultation, and surgical prowess. In Psychiatry, the main skill that must be mastered is the skill of communication. It has a complex significance, both diagnostic and therapeutic, and is gradually achieved through continuous effort, knowledge, and patience.
In clinical Psychiatry, the primary method of communication is the psychiatric interview. Can a Psychiatric book teach skills? Certainly not. However, it can contribute toward this goal by covering the theoretical aspects of them. This is attempted in the first chapter of this book ("Doctor-Patient Relationship", "Psychiatric Interview", "Psychiatric History").
