These two seemingly very different stories share something in common: the desperate struggle for liberation from all kinds of social, familial, and emotional ties. Both were written during the period between 1919-1920, at the new beginning that Hesse undertakes – after a nervous breakdown – in the Italian part of Switzerland, Ticino, which he would later make his home. He himself describes this period as the richest, most expressive, and most passionate time of his life.
In the first story, Hesse takes his "Child Soul," excavates it, turns it inside out, shakes it, searches for it, punishes it, and redeems it. He manages with his writing to awaken the same feelings in those who read this experience of his and manage to feel him beyond the written words.
In his second story, "The Last Summer of Klingsor," the painter Klingsor senses the approaching death. He knows everything about the transience of man and his demise. Days filled with deadly anxiety, days ablaze and nights filled with ecstasy, half-mad and drunk, he struggles with the image of himself, the portrait of his soul, but also that of all people, his last work.
