This book aims to continue what was started by the seminar organized by the Athens Pride Festival in May 2009. Public discussion, triggered by academic research and activist inquiries regarding gender and sexuality, is more than necessary.
The politics/theory of gender and sexuality is not a new issue, either in Greece or internationally, although it is often marginalized as a secondary concern. Simultaneously, the common ground between 'science' and 'activism' is often challenged, resulting in the enclosure of the two 'worlds'. Disturbing these arrangements and breaking down these fortifications is part of the book's agenda.
Representations of dominant culture, online snippets, excerpts from interviews, anthropological observations, sociological gradations, internet dating topographies, interdisciplinary propositions, and activist texts constitute the raw material of the writings included in the book.
The texts deal with experience, the construction of the subject, self-representations, the dynamics of collective inclusion, and the boundaries between normalized order and deviant life. They unfold concerns about the disciplinary measures of gender order as well as the disciplinary measures of the subversive dynamics of sexuality and gender identities.
As an endeavor, this collection seeks a forward escape aiming for both ownership and the creation of ground. The goal is to contribute tanto to the established 'scientific' as well as to the corresponding 'activist' action, potentially inviting both to confront their habits and rupture with their past.
