The three terms, "conscious", "preconscious", and "unconscious", are handy and allow us great freedom of movement; provided we do not forget that, from a descriptive standpoint, there are two types of unconscious, while from a dynamic perspective there is only one.
Subsequent psychoanalytic research has shown that these distinctions were also insufficient. This is clearly presented in the following situation, which seems crucial to us. We imagine the mental processes of a person as constituting a coherent organization and say that this organization forms the person's "Ego". The consciousness depends on this "Ego"; it controls and monitors the externalization of stimuli. In the "Ego", we see the psychic will, and it exercises control over all partial processes, even while asleep, it still exerts a censoring right over dreams.
From the "Ego", repressions and certain psychic tendencies also arise.
