Description

Our modern and contemporary history, from the fall of Constantinople to the present day, is rich in events that mark the course of our nation. Key figures in these events, political, military, and cultural, were personalities who left their mark on historical developments.

In this original book at hand, the most significant events that occurred throughout this period are recorded by the day of the year, offering the reader a sense of continuity and knowledge of the past: births, deaths, historical moments, small and large incidents that deserve a place in our memory.

SEPTEMBER 26 Something remains for Elgin... 1687: A Venetian bomb falls on the Parthenon, causing huge destruction to the monument. The bomb fell during the siege of the Acropolis by the Venetian commander Morosini. The destruction caused by the explosion, which was triggered by stored gunpowder, was incalculable. The roof was completely destroyed, as well as many columns of the long sides, sculptures of the frieze, triglyphs, and metopes.

NOVEMBER 4 THE SAME DAY: In 1883, Nikolaos Plastiras is born. In 1901, the archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos is born. In 1912, Aridaia and Ikaria are liberated. In 1920, Dimitrios Rallis forms a government. In 1932, the minority government of Panagiotis Tsaldaris is sworn in. In 1980, the five-day workweek is established, 70 years after the establishment of the six-day workweek, which began to be implemented on the first Sunday of January 1910. In 2001, Vasilis Maras is crowned world champion on the horizontal bar.

1885: In a forbidden area of Lycabettus, a policeman on duty finds the British envoy in Athens, Sir Arthur Nicholson, taking his walk, disregarding the prohibition. The policeman beats Nicholson, even though he declares his status. This created a diplomatic incident and the policeman was dismissed, but Nicholson demanded a public apology from the Greek Police. Prime Minister Charilaos Trikoupis yielded to this demand, and a police detachment presented arms to the English consul Charles Merlin, singing the English national anthem.
