The Twenty-One, as we know it through the official historical tradition, resembles the inverted image reflected in the murky waters of a lake.
It is indeed the same picture, but presented in reverse.
To truly understand the authentic Twenty-One, one must delve into other texts, those that prepared for the uprising, those written while the gunfire roared and the machetes sparkled, and the memoirs of the fighters - of Makrygiannis, Kasomoulis, Kolokotronis, Fotakis, Spyromilios, Perrraivis, Spiliadis, and so many others.
There were two Twenty-Ones: One of the people and the more progressive individuals of that time, and the other of the local chieftains and politicians. The roots of the former draw their juices from Rigas Velestinlis' "Rights of Man," while the latter is overshadowed by the weighty shadow of the "Patriarchal Teaching" of the Most Blessed Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem, Kyr Antimos - or, more accurately, Gregory. (Dimitris Fotiadis)
