To Colotes: An attack against the Epicurean philosopher Colotes, for his critical and mocking stance towards all the great philosophers who preceded him and their systems. It is well said that "live unnoticed": Plutarch criticizes the Epicurean maxim "live unnoticed," while simultaneously trying to show that Epicurus himself did not apply it in his life.
On Music: This text attributed to Plutarch is one of the few testimonies that can illuminate the subject of music (melody, rhythm, meter) and give sound to the silent antiquity.
The biographer and philosopher Plutarch (c. 50-120 AD) was born in Chaeronea, Boeotia. Through his travels, he broadened his intellectual horizons and came into contact with prominent figures of the time, mainly distinguished Romans. He spent the greater part of his life in his homeland and held public priestly offices.
His surviving work is distinguished in the historical-biographical part and in the so-called "Ethical" writings. In the "Parallel Lives," prominent Greeks and Romans are compared, and the worlds each represents are indirectly contrasted. In the "Ethicals," issues of ethics, philosophy, science, politics, literary criticism, as well as topics from the realm of religion, nature, history, etc., are developed, sometimes in the form of dialogues and sometimes as treatises or dissertations.
Erudite and with a refined spirit, the author expressed traditional Greek values with simplicity and an optimistic perspective. His work delights and teaches, while also being a significant source of literature from the classical and Hellenistic periods.
