On Multitude of Friendships: The creation of many friendly bonds as an obstacle to the formation of true friendship and as a waste of the energies necessary for a genuine and costly friendly bond.
On Fortune: Rejection of `causal` fortune, responsible for the happiness or misery of people. The free behavior and its consequences.
On Virtue and Vice: A brief reference to the qualitative superiority of life governed by adherence to moral principles.
Consolatory Address to Apollonius: Consolatory words addressed to the father of a prematurely lost child. The authenticity of the work is questionable.
The biographer and philosopher Plutarch (c. 50-120 AD) was born in Chaeronea, Boeotia. Through his travels, he broadened his knowledge horizon and came into contact with prominent personalities of the time, mainly notable Romans. He lived most of his life in his homeland and held public priestly offices.
His surviving works are distinguished into historical-biographical parts and the so-called `Moral` writings. In the `Parallel Lives`, prominent Greeks and Romans are compared, and the worlds each represents are indirectly contrasted. In the `Moral` writings, issues of ethics, philosophy, science, politics, literary criticism, as well as topics from the fields of religion, nature, history, etc., are developed, sometimes in dialogical form and other times as treatises or dissertations.
Erudite and with a subtle spirit, the author expressed traditional Greek values with simplicity and an optimistic outlook. His work delights and teaches, while being a significant source of the literature of the classical and Hellenistic periods.
