Description

On Fate: A theory about fate, combining both divine providence and the freedom of will.

About Socrates' Daimon: A narrative concerning the liberation of Thebes (379 B.C.) from Spartan rule with the help of a group of conspirators and regarding the philosophical discussions that took place during the conspiratorial meetings, mainly triggered by the arrival of a young Pythagorean in Thebes.

On Escape: An essay of practical philosophy addressed in a letter to an exile from Sardis.

Consolation to the Woman: A comforting text by Plutarch to the wife of Timoxenus regarding the death in infancy of their daughter. A text filled with sincerity and genuine emotion.

The biographer and philosopher Plutarch (approximately 50-120 A.D.) was born in Chaeronea, Boeotia. Through his travels, he expanded his intellectual horizons and came into contact with prominent figures of his time, mainly distinguished Romans. He spent most of his life in his homeland and held public religious offices. His surviving works are distinguished in the historical-biographical part and in the so-called 'Ethical' writings.

In the 'Parallel Lives', prominent Greeks and Romans are compared, and the worlds each represents are indirectly contrasted. In the 'Ethical' writings, issues of ethics, philosophy, science, politics, literary criticism, as well as topics from the fields of religion, nature, history, etc., are developed, sometimes in the form of dialogues and other times as treatises or dissertations.

A polymath with a delicate spirit, the author expressed traditional Greek values simply and with an optimistic perspective. His work delights and teaches, serving as a significant source of the literature of classical and Hellenistic times.
