Hippocrates was born on the island of Kos in 460 BC. According to tradition, his lineage traced back to Asclepius and Hercules. His ancestors were kings, lords, and priest-physicians. He practiced medicine initially in his hometown and later traveled to many places. He died in Thessaly at an advanced age, around 90 years old. Hippocrates marks a turning point in the history of Medicine. With him, the era of 'scientific Medicine' begins, as the term science is understood today.
He combines the two sources of knowledge (sensation and reasoning), utilizes experience and sound reasoning, and tailors his treatments to the specific patient, whom he views as a psychosomatic whole. His teachings and work are characterized by their moral integrity, the brilliance of his concepts, and the scientific insight in medical practice. The pure scientific character of his work is absolutely confirmed by modern Medicine.
