Description

This book aims to demonstrate both that Chemistry (in its current sense) was founded and developed in Ancient Greece, and that Greek alchemists (empirical chemists) were not related to the alchemists of Eastern countries who primarily focused on the transmutation of base metals into gold.

Empirical chemists are presented in the Greek context even during prehistoric times. Many natural philosophers articulate correct chemical concepts within the framework of philosophy, although they do not use experimentation. It is noted that the words and phrases in this book that are enclosed in quotation marks are Ancient Greek. It was deemed necessary to maintain the Ancient Greek declensions of the names of philosophers and chemists. It was also considered appropriate not to translate certain simple Ancient Greek texts into Modern Greek.

The book is divided into 3 Parts. The 1st Part titled The Chemistry of the Ancient Greeks contains all possible information regarding the science of Chemistry in Ancient Greece. It includes a total of 18 original paragraphs, in terms of content, which lead directly to the conclusion that the previous claims are true.

The 2nd Part contains chemical nomenclatures and chemical texts. It also includes all the known treaties of the Ancient Greeks that contain beginnings or topics of Chemistry. The 3rd Part includes the 6 periods of the evolution of Chemistry in the Ancient Greek world: Proto-Minoan - Mycenaean, Homeric, Pre-Socratic, Socratic, Alexandrian, and Post-Alexandrian. During these periods, the natural philosophers who addressed relevant topics as well as the chemists are mentioned. Each period is accompanied by its characteristics regarding Chemistry.

Following the 3rd Part, an extensive bibliography is provided. Thanks are expressed to friends Georgios Manousopoulos (philologist - author, General Secretary of the Society of Greek Philologists), Ali Bezendek (mathematician), and my daughters Roula Spandagou (mathematician - author) and Niki Spandagou (economist) for their assistance in bringing this publication to fruition.
