A letter that never reached its recipient. In November 1919, Franz Kafka rented a room in a boarding house, fifty kilometers north of Prague. Over the next nine days, he wrote a 103-page letter, which begins with the salutation "Dear Father" and ends with the signature "Franz." Kafka is thirty-six years old when he writes this letter and his father is sixty-seven, yet Franz's words evoke an insecure, frightened child who stands awkwardly before the fearsome parental figure.
While diaries and numerous letters may shed light on the psyche of their author, we could never truly gauge the extent of the father's influence on his character formation –and beyond– without this unique document, the author of which delves mercilessly and with painful precision into the depths of himself to retrieve evidence of hatred and hostility.
The reason why this letter never reached its recipient has not been revealed. Was he persuaded otherwise, or did he ultimately consider, through the very act of writing, that the letter held greater utility as a text of self-understanding, while on the other hand, it would contribute nothing to mending relations with his father? Whatever happened, the fortunate outcome is that the Letter to His Father, considered one of the foundational texts of literary modernism, found its way to the reading public and its rightful place in the understanding and interpretation of the Kafkaesque literary universe.
Kafka must have been aware from a very early stage of his unique nature: his different desires, his frenzied imagination, and his expressive abilities. He could not adapt to the general environment, and especially to the environment of his family, which he nevertheless definitively left only a year before his death, which occurred in June 1924, at the age of just forty-one.
The tense cohabitation with his family led to explosions, which Kafka managed alone at night in his room, inventing novelistic heroes: fathers and sons.
