Lulu is a product of exquisite fermentations, let's say a star of regeneration, much like the universe in Kabbalah and modern Greece in the view of Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos. However, if the nature and details of New Greece sometimes provoke expressions of doubt, at least for the malicious, Lulu and its aesthetic surroundings radiate beyond malicious prattle or petty and controversial judgement.
Components of Lulu were The Spirit of the Earth and Pandora's Box, two plays by Wedekind that preceded it, and their later merging by the author himself gave birth to this famous blend. The premiere of The Spirit of the Earth took place in Leipzig in 1898, while that of Pandora's Box was in Nuremberg in 1904.
In 1905, Alban Berg attended a private performance of this second work at the Intimate Theater in Vienna, where Pandora's Box was staged under the direction of Karl Kraus, after the authorities categorically refused to promote the work for public access.
