Written in 1914-15, "The Trial" was published after Kafka's death, in 1925, and is considered an unfinished work, with even the order of its chapters being uncertain. The hero K., a bank clerk, is arrested for reasons unknown to him, and is persistently interrogated in dreamlike distorted procedures, trying in vain to discover the causes of his guilt, only to die in the end by the knife of two unknown men dressed in black.
