Knowledge governed by love – if this were truly the foundation of education, Russell believes the world could change its appearance. The author outlines his ideals: Initially, the cultivation of character should be fearless and caring, with wise family guidance and kindergartens, where interaction with other children is as important as skillful guidance.
Then the development of intellect, where pleasure is balanced with the need for clarity and usefulness with selflessness, which is the highest good and the source of progress. Many of his ideas, products of his own experience, which helped him verify the findings of psychology, have been accepted since their very first formulation 40 years ago.
Russell concludes his book with a poignant question: "Do we love our children enough to make them what they can become: namely, free citizens of the world?"
