The studies published in this volume were written between 1936 and 1943 under adverse circumstances. Because the author either did not have the necessary books at his disposal; or he wrote them far from companions who would help him, judging or criticizing, to think better; or because they were published during times (1936-1940) when censorship hindered discussion without certain omissions.
The "Dialogue on Poetry," for example, which took place with Konstantinos Tsatsos, ended when Tsatsos was a political exile on an island, from which he sent his final response. Thus, these studies are marked by the circumstances, having not only the flaws of the author but also the flaws of the times. I note this not to seek leniency (leniency in such matters is always harmful) but to explain the absence of certain points from my texts, points whose lack I feel.
In addition to these omissions, there should be others due to the mental peace and the material time I could allocate for such endeavors. For instance, I would have liked to include in this volume an essay on Cavafy, which occupied my generation so much.
A study of the Alexandrian poet, as a sign of a modern world that is fading and as the last representative of a long Greek tradition that has disappeared (I mean: the "logical" Greek tradition), would somewhat complete the unfinished image I present in the following pages. I had begun such a work, but I don’t know if it will ever reach completion. I regret this because I believe that Cavafy is the point where a dead tradition "consumes" itself within life, and I also regret because I feel that I owed something to Alexandria.
In conclusion, I would like to add that, under the current conditions of our lives, this book would not have been published without the kind and encouraging care of a few friends who thought it necessary to circulate it from now in Egypt.
