Description & Specifications

The long-out-of-print book by Panagiotis Kontylis, "Global Politics After the Cold War," is once again published by the Foundation editions.

The end of the Cold War and the collapse of communism do not signify either the "end of history" or a simple transition of the international system from a bipolar to a multipolar structure. On the contrary, they represent a historical turning point and the beginning of a new phase in the history of global politics of the Modern Era, which began with the great discoveries and commercial capitalism, only to later experience its greatest upheavals with European imperialism of the 19th century and the competition of East and West in the 20th.

However, to grasp the current character of global politics, it is not enough to review this prehistory. It is also essential to examine the past and future of the dominant state, the intertwining of politics with economic and perhaps biological factors, the new functions of nationalism, and the new possibilities of conducting war.

Finally, the political consequences of the universalism of human rights and the prospects for a global order need to be discussed in the context of explosive ecological and demographic problems. The aim of these analyses cannot, of course, be to predict individual events, but rather to explore the driving forces and central trends of global politics.

An afterword written specifically for the Greek edition of the book examines the conditions, parameters, and illusions of Greek national politics within today's European and global circumstances.
