Description

The inability of Greek society to utilize its assets, its ancient heritage, and the wealth of its land.

The farmer who prefers to throw his oranges in the dumps instead of working hard to create products with a Greek signature that would claim a place in the international market passively faces his life.

Just like the country that instead of leveraging its privileged relationship with ancient Greece, which is one of the building blocks of Western Civilization, confines itself to the demand for the return of the Elgin Marbles. In both cases, it seeks compensation.

The question is not whether Greece's claim for the Parthenon sculptures is legally justified. The question is how all this adventure has affected our collective consciousness, particularly in our identity relationship with our antiquity.

Was it creative, did it provoke dynamics, or did it flatter our inert materials? Did we behave as descendants or as heirs?

For the time being, I hold the thought that the role of the Bible in the Greek case will be undertaken by the Acropolis of Athens. Although the vast majority of Greeks were illiterate or uneducated, they saw the Acropolis. They did not need to read or understand it. It was the face of their common origin that would allow them to overcome the resistance of localism. The marbles were the "sacred bones of the Greeks." Like the icons of Orthodoxy that allow the believer to participate in the ritual even if they cannot read the lives of the saints, the synaxaria, or understand the words of the divine liturgy.
