Description

The idea for the collection began in late 2011, and the first selection of the texts that comprise it was completed a few months later. During that period, a very small group of people with different political backgrounds and paths came together on the occasion of the mobilizations against the memoranda and the rupture of the previously existing social contract by the Greek bourgeoisie and international capitalism - through the EU and IMF - to the detriment of both the working class and the small and middle-class strata.

In the city of Athens, these continuous and mass mobilizations culminated in Syntagma Square, in front of the Parliament building, where at one point they faced a planned - and successful - attack by the repressive forces in order to disperse the crowd. The persistence, from the side of the social and political forces participating in the mobilizations, in repeating the protest in a space where the state repression proved to be given and recurrent, raised certain concerns for us.

These concerns led us to seek sources and analyses that addressed these issues. The results of this search made it clear to us that our questions were not new at all. On the contrary, they have engaged both the revolutionary movement and scientific disciplines since the 19th century.

This collection comes, in a way, to engage with or highlight the following two issues: the more general one - that of the revolutionary moment - and the more specific one - that of Space in relation to uprising or revolution, and primarily how the urban state continuously transforms space to suppress uprisings occurring within it with the least political and economic cost.
