The first novel by Giannis Skarimpas, Mariambas, was written and published at an extremely critical time for modern Greek literature.

Both in poetry and in prose, the traditional way of writing is gradually being abandoned and new trends, partly brought from Europe and partly born from a local need for renewal, come to prevail and create a new style.
