Description

Loss calls the soul to perform a task: The proper farewell to the beloved being that has been lost. Mourning is the completion of the proper farewell. To live, one must know how to mourn.

Sometimes, under certain circumstances, mourning fails. Then reactive depression appears. Depression is the complaint of a betrayed love, which is not directed straight to the recipient, but through a third party.

The key to depression is the undecided state of the object of loss: It is neither lost nor not-lost. The paradox of the undecided state is supported by the internalization of the lost: The Ego has internalized it.

The processing of this internalization and the overcoming of the undecided state of the lost transforms depression into mourning, and thus heals it. The best prevention against depression is mourning: the art of the proper farewell.

To live means to experience losses. That is, the experience of loss paradoxically defines the state of being alive: Before you live and after you no longer live, you do not experience losses. Conversely, a clear criterion for whether you are alive is whether you experience losses. I experience losses, therefore I exist. Similarly, to die means to undergo the ultimate loss: I lose loss as an event and as a possibility. I no longer lose anything because I myself have been lost. I do not exist without losses. Without losses, I do not exist. Or in other words: Loss is the destiny of existence. The mode of existence of the subject, which has a body, mind, memory, reason, imagination, relationships, bonds.
