Tennessee Williams and his plays exert a unique fascination upon us. Perhaps it is because the characters resonate with our most sensitive chords. Perhaps it is because in these characters we recognize pieces of ourselves.
The biographical details of Tom, who became Tennessee, are approximately known to all. His popular works have revealed his entire family background, as well as his traumatic experiences. These works, for the most part, represent lived realities.
However, the well-known aspect of Williams is only the bright side of the moon. The other side remains well hidden in the darkness. It took almost a decade of research, travels to international conferences from Orlando, USA, to Nancy, France, and from Boston to New Orleans, for me to start approaching the unknown Williams. And that was not enough. I had to direct his plays and adaptations of the great playwright to realize that what we knew and what we saw from Tennessee Williams was only the tip of the iceberg.
Some of my conclusions and ideas are included in this volume. Others remain on my computer, and I intend to return to them. As a professional historian-Byzantinologist who shifted into theater research, I wanted to write a book that does not adhere to the scientific rules of documentation. After all, Williams seemed to me more suited to a text systematically evidential but without footnotes and without detailed bibliography.
I feel that as important as these are for a scientist, they seem restrictive in the eyes of an artist. This is also the capacity with which I present my testimony/contribution to the paradox called "Tennessee Williams".
