Description

“(Spring evening. A large room in an old house. An elderly woman dressed in black is speaking to a young man. The lights are not on. An unrelenting moonlight streams in through the two windows. I forgot to mention that the woman in black has published two or three interesting poetry collections with a religious spirit. So, the Woman in Black is speaking to the young man.) Let me come with you. What a moon tonight! The moon is good; it won’t show the gray in my hair. The moon will make my hair golden again. You won’t understand. Let me come with you. When there is moonlight, the shadows grow inside the house, invisible hands pull the curtains, a faint finger writes in the dust of the piano forgotten words – I don’t want to hear them. Be quiet. Let me come with you just a little further, to the brick wall, to where the road turns and the city appears, concrete and airy, whitewashed in moonlight, so indifferent and ethereal, so real like a metaphysics that finally makes you believe that you exist and do not exist, that you never existed, that time and its decay never existed. Let me come with you”.

  • The Sonata of Moonlight by Giannis Ritsos is a masterpiece of Greek poetry, filled with deep human sensitivity and an atmosphere of melancholy. Through the monologue of a mature woman addressing a young man, Ritsos reveals an inner world that pulses with love and pain, dreams and fragments of a past that is now fading. This woman, with her form seeming to deconstruct in the moonlight, represents something timeless: the human need for communication, for acceptance, and for a moment of eternity within the unbearable flow of time.

The poet uses the simplicity and rhythm of words to convey the silence and intensity of loneliness, while the motifs of moonlight and night lend the poetry a mysterious, almost musical dimension. Each line hides a whisper, a gaze that is never returned, leaving the reader with a sense of bittersweet nostalgia. The Sonata of Moonlight is not just a poem; it is a lament for what is lost and cannot be spoken, a sonata that unfolds in the moonlight and touches our soul.

With this work, Ritsos reminds us of the beauty and weight of the human experience, and invites us to immerse ourselves in the darkness of the night, to discover the light that exists within us.

The print quality, the smell of the paper, and the font are ideal for me.

    I highly recommend reading it!
