Homer, the greatest epic poet of Ancient Greece, lived in the 8th century BC. However, his dating is disputed. Many cities argued about his origins, of which Smyrna probably had the most legitimate claims. Many myths were created about his life. According to the prevailing tradition, he died on Ios.
In addition to the 'Iliad' (15,692 lines) and the 'Odyssey' (12,110 lines), other works were attributed to him from antiquity. His two great epics are fundamental to Greek history and education. Pisistratus in the 4th century AD compiled the Homeric poems, which, after processing mainly by the Alexandrians and after corrections in more recent times, have been passed down to us.
