Homer, the greatest epic poet of ancient Greece, lived in the 8th century BC. However, his exact dates are disputed. Many cities claimed to be his birthplace, with Smyrna likely making the strongest claim. Many myths have been created about his life. According to the most accepted tradition, he died in Ios. Besides the "Iliad" (15,692 lines) and the "Odyssey" (12,110 lines), attributed to him from antiquity, other works were also credited to him. His two major epics are fundamental to Greek history and education.
In the 4th century BC, Pisistratus collected the Homeric poems, which, after editing mainly by the Alexandrians and subsequent corrections through modern times, have been passed down to us.
