Every time we hear about King Alexander, our mind naturally goes to Alexander the Great. However, before him, there was another Alexander, the First, also a king of Macedonia, whose great-grandson was Alexander the Great. He lived during the tumultuous era of the Persian wars and did everything to expand the then-small Macedonian state and solidify it. He laid the strong foundations upon which his famous successors later stood, emphasizing his Greek identity at every opportunity.
