Description

This edition presents a historical and significant church in Oia with new accurate details and documents from which it emerges that:

a) the church is patriarchal - cross-sponsorship, b) it was founded in the early 1600s and not in 1804 as was previously believed, c) despite the terrible earthquakes that occurred, from the "time of misfortune," 1650 to the destructive earthquake of 1956, it miraculously suffered not a single damage, remaining upright through the ages, d) its wooden altar screen was painted by the important Cycladic icon painter Christodoulos Kalergis (1722), a fact unknown until today in the literature, e) its icons have been painted by renowned Santorini painters, including Emmanuel Guillet, whose works are presented for the first time, and f) it possesses a patriarchal seal with a lead seal and a multitude of sacred objects of particular value for the ecclesiastical history of the island.

The book is considered a poem contributing to the history of Santorini. In addition to presenting the church, it contains concise texts about Ancient Thera, the Frankish-ruled Santorini, its ecclesiastical history, as well as detailed chronological tables of the island's history.

The edition is published with an introductory note by the Philologist - Paleographer and Santorini researcher, Mr. Agamemnon Tselikas, through the Historical Archive of the National Bank. The book features rich photographic material and impressive photographs of Oia. A total of one hundred and ten, 14 of which were taken from a helicopter (from above).
