The distance from childhood and the torment of adulthood disorient both protagonists of the novel, who, in their rebellion against the lies and conformity of bourgeois society, follow two different paths:

one, enchanted by artistic and spiritual life, seeks in his almost ascetic existential rigor a higher dimension that continually eludes him, while the other, more fragile and passionate, after a period of confusion and debauchery, will ultimately integrate into the urban world.

At the center, however, lies the inner need to preserve or attain the true meaning of friendship.
