Description

Despite the development of technology and the science of graphics with computers, as well as the wide range of applications they are involved in, there is a noticeable lack of a Greek textbook that covers both the theoretical foundation and the algorithmic support of applications and extensions of the science.

Unfortunately, the existing Greek literature approaches the subject more from the perspective of using systems in recreational activities and less as a science with rules, limitations, and prospects. This current book aims to fill that gap while also serving as an introductory volume on interactive three-dimensional graphic systems.

Specifically, the content of the book covers techniques and methods for managing two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometry and graphic information with the help of computers, and it is aimed at students and graduates from computer science and spatial study programs (computer science, information technology, GIS, geomatics) who wish to learn about graphic technology, either to complete their knowledge or to understand the algorithmic foundation of tools and methods used in their work.

The approach to the topics follows a hands-on practical and learn-by-doing philosophy, leading to the creation of a complete design environment for developing graphic information in two and three dimensions. At the same time, guidance is provided for the development of professional applications, as well as for covering extensions of the design environment towards geographic information systems, digital spatial documentation, the Internet/Web, etc.

The major advantages of the learn-by-doing approach to the topics include the necessarily high level of participation of the student-reader who follows a course based on the book, the perception of the capabilities and structures of graphic software and its logical functioning, and finally the sense of building, creating, and succeeding.

The algorithmic structure of the book requires the reader to have very good knowledge of structured programming and data structures, while the requirement for developing an independent graphic environment presupposes an understanding of space, capabilities for spatial analysis, and knowledge of geometric topology.

Particular emphasis was placed on an independent presentation of concepts and algorithms from the computer environment, while adhering strictly to the guidelines of internationally accepted graphic standards (CORE, GKS, PHIGS, PHIGS+, OpenGL, OpenInventor) for strictly neutral representations of geometric, graphic, and qualitative information.

Finally, regarding the reader's equipment in software and hardware for developing algorithms and creating the integrated graphic environment, a C or Pascal compiler and a simple graphic CRT system are sufficient. A color monitor and a high-resolution graphics card are desirable but not necessary.
