Illiteracy is an issue that, at the threshold of 2000, stigmatizes a significant number of individuals not only in Greece but around the world. Thus, the multifaceted nature of the problem, its resilience over time, and the unexplored aspects of the issue have highlighted the necessity for a systematic and comprehensive approach to this subject, with the aim of addressing a crucial gap in modern Greek education.

The perspective of this study is primarily historical, as it tracks, documents, and interprets the problem in Greece over time, while also incorporating a comparative dimension. The monograph stems from a concern of educational policy but simultaneously fits into the realm of continuing education, since illiteracy is an expanded concept that pertains to both school pedagogy and adult education.
