Description

Description

Karyotakis developed in "Elegies and Satires" an innovative and genre-advancing poetic art, founded on the dialogical convergence of satirical and elegiac poetry. With a focus on the achievements of Symbolism and in constant dialogue both with poets whose works played a decisive role in shaping Modernism, such as J. Laforgue and the French fantaisistes, as well as with his Greek contemporaries, mainly with M. Malakasis and R. Filira, Karyotakis created an ontological and artistic perception of openness: what held weight here for the modern artist was his unpretentious exposure to the tensions of real life and the present, immediate power of the shockwaves of these tensions.

Thus, the poet was able to delve into the complex web of life conditions of his time, which constituted a stifling enclosure of ready-made roles and repertoires of discourse, of mass and spectacular consumption, and to shape it poetically, developing the terms of a poetic art in social, political, and ethical alertness: a poetic art that remains continuously present.
