Description & Specifications

GOLDONI ON CHIOGGIA: Chioggia is a beautiful and wealthy city, 25 miles from Venice; it is built on the same lagoon and is isolated, but has almost become a peninsula thanks to a long wooden bridge that connects it to the mainland. Chioggia has a governor who holds the title of mayor and who always comes from one of the prominent patrician families of the Republic of Venice from which it depends. It has a very large, comfortable, and well-fortified harbor. There are nobles, the bourgeoisie, and the merchant class. There are people of worth and distinguished individuals. In general, it is a respected city; and I do not intend to talk in this comedy about anything other than the common people, who, as I said, make up about 5/6 of this large population. These quarrels are common among the common folk, and in Chioggia, they occur more often than elsewhere; for among the 60,000 inhabitants of this city, there are at least 50,000 poor or humble-origin people, almost all fishermen or sailors.

The Reform of Theatre by Goldoni: Carlo Goldoni cultivated all theatrical genres: comedy, tragedy, tragicomedy, drama, comic opera. However, he owes his fame to character comedy and the real revolution he brought to Italian theatre with it. A revolution that took place not only on stage but also turned against the society of his time. He abolished the standardized spirit of commedia dell'arte and created character comedy. He based his works on the bourgeoisie, banishing the aristocracy from the stage. He is not a satirist; he is a playwright. He is a realist, but he presents his themes poetically.
