This work started several years ago when I was asked by the National Historical Museum to view and identify some plans, among which was the palace of Tripoli. Later, Ms. Alice Solomou showed me the plans preserved in the files of George I, still at the National Historical Museum.
According to the testimony of Julia Karolou, lady-in-waiting to Queen Olga, these plans were submitted to the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece to be displayed at the George I Museum, which was to be built within the National Garden. These plans remained neglected and unexamined for approximately 75 years.
In February 1999, in collaboration with my colleague Ms. Natalia Boura, we proceeded with an initial presentation of them related to the palaces of the younger branch of the House of Schleswig-Holstein of Glücksburg in Greece. Since then, I have continued the research, expanding it to include the other palaces in Greece during the 19th century, both realized and unrealized.
All the information presented in this volume is, of course, not new. There are extensive and documented monographs on the Gaertner palaces in Athens, Tatoi, and Mon Repos in Corfu, while much has been written about the unrealized proposals of Schinkel and Klenze for the Athens palaces.
This volume presents in detail, for the first time, the unimplemented proposals of L. Lange for Otto's palaces, the also unrealized proposals for the summer palaces of George I, as well as those for the palaces in Petalioi and Tatoi by renowned architects. I believe this concludes an initial comprehensive presentation of the palaces in the Greek area during the 19th century, while also opening the way for other monographs.
