“And so I entered a broken world searching for the dreamy companionship of love...” (BrokenTower) Obviously, the "broken world" refers to post-war America. After the enormous economic crisis that took on proportions of war, values and social balances are being redefined.

The old world that is dying (Blanche) wants to be adopted by another that is in a state of orgasmic creativity (Kowalski). It projects a new identity, an intense sexuality, and attempts to take root in the new, which in turn is fed by the flesh of the old.

Blanche's discourse highlights the American dream with all its pathologies. A dream that leads to defeat and ultimate dissolution. The eternal struggle of the old with the new, the masculine with the feminine, sensitivity with crude realism is excellent material to approach “social realism” that T. Williams proposes as a response to “poetic realism,” while at the same time the wet, suffocating night sings its own blues.
