The Cow is a symbol; it represents the dream of economic and social advancement and prosperity. The mother, with a small widow's pension, dreams of seeing her daughter become a great opera singer and her son a great poet. Their dreams will only become reality if the fat cow produces milk that will be turned into butter and sold.

However, soon the cow is sanctified and transforms from their savior into their oppressor. The play was written in Moscow in 1956 and sharply addresses the issue of private property, which is projected by small-bourgeois morality as the supreme value, capable of dissolving human relationships and undermining any sense of purity and sincerity.
