This volume is dedicated to the memory of Stella Papadaki-Oekland, a professor of Byzantine Archaeology at the University of Crete. Stella Papadaki-Oekland was one of the older members of the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Crete and contributed with her distinctive presence to its formation. She was also an active member of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies.
The book is published at the initiative of her colleagues. Teachers, collaborators, students, and friends participate with their contributions. It contains studies on archaeology and history, focusing on the Byzantine period and the history of Crete.
Historiographical approaches and anthropological theories of art, particularly the representations of the sacred, complement the broad spectrum of studies. These are issues that are directly or indirectly related to the work of the honoree or to research projects that served as a basis for her collaboration with the authors of the volume.
