A classic work of the 20th century, "Death and the Maiden" by Ariel Dorfman, was staged for a year in the West End, was a success on Broadway, and was adapted into a film by Roman Polanski starring Ben Kingsley and Sigourney Weaver.
A woman seeks revenge when the man she believes was her tormentor reappears in her life.
"Death and the Maiden" was first read at the Institute for Contemporary Art in London in November 1990. Following a workshop production directed in Santiago, Chile in March 1991, the play had its world premiere at the Royal Court Upstairs, London, in July 1991, subsequently transferring to the Royal Court Main Stage in October.
Subsequently, the play transferred to the West End, at the Duke of York's Theatre, in February 1992.
"Death and the Maiden" won the Olivier Award in 1992 for Best New Play.
